631 Memories
2023 Installation l Digital Media & 629 Lamps
Spanning 631 years from the Joseon Dynasty to modern-day Seoul in 2023, "631 Memories" captures the evanescent glow of time and history in its illuminative design. Comprising 631 individual lights, each serves as a beacon, not only enshrining the desires and hopes that have propelled the city's evolution over the centuries but also symbolizing a warm welcome to every visitor. Set against a serene soundscape reminiscent of ancient landscapes, the installation gently resonates with the symbolic flow of time.
This visual narrative unfolds the ephemeral transition of light in Seoul, from the dimming hues of sunset's deep reds to the pre-dawn blues, culminating in the brilliance of sunrise. It portrays the diurnal cycle while also alluding to Seoul's historical journey over 631 years, now brought to life in London. By representing both a single day and over six centuries of history, the work evokes a sense of temporal interplay.
The artist intentionally fills the space with light, inviting viewers to let go of pre-existing experiences, emphasizing the expansion of memory and imagery. Any direct interaction with the audience is intentionally excluded; instead, the installation emphasizes interaction with history, time, and nature. Highlighting the immutable principles of nature's luminescence and the relentless passage of time, "631 Memories" intertwines technology with wonder in a radiant homage to Seoul's storied past and its embrace of all who venture within its glow.
